Tthe long awaited offical release of the July 1970 Maui recordings! The concert performance (2 sets) took place on the island of Maui, Hawaii on July 30th 1970, on the slopes of the Haleakala volcano. "Live At Maui" or "Live On Maui" would've made more sense as a tilel but there you go.
The idea of creating an event/movie on the island had been discussed by Jimi and his manager Mike Jeffrey back in 1969. The resulting movie by film director Chuck Wein (who had previously worked with Andy Warhol) movie built around the event was released back in 1971(see DVD section for a review of that terrible mess of a film). The "soundtrack album" of the film, titled Rainbow Bridge", didn't feature any recordings from the two sets that Jimi, Mitch and Billy performed on the day, but 1968 to 1970 studio recordings and a live track (Hear My Train A Comin') from Berkeley 1970. No live recordings were used for the album Rainbow Bridge because the recordings had technical problems (mainly because of the high winds on the day). To resolve this problem for the movie, Mitch studio overdubbed his drum parts but only 17 minutes of concert footage appeared at the end of the film! The Blu-ray disc included here is termed a "documentary", so obviously they haven't unearthed sufficient lost footage to constitute a true live video. However, circulating bootleg video has already featured 50 minutes of live film (though some of it is crowd and island scenes) and the Experience Hendrix promo clips reveal even more never-before-seen sections. So apart from the usual talking heads, let's hope that the Blu-ray disc will feature at least a good hour of concert footage without voice-overs.
The actual live recordings from the Maui performances surfaced back in the early 70s on bootlegs and in 2002, the near-full concert appeared in the shops on the unofficial Purple Haze Records label. That featured a mix of the songs with drum overdubs and the live drums (which are a little distant in the mix).
As for this new live album from Experience Hendrix, the Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) promo clip and the three other tracks that have already appeared officially in the past (see below) all feature Mitch's overdubs, so one wonders if the whole thing will use those overdubs (did Mitch play over all the songs back in 1971?). Perhaps some tracks have been tweaked with new technology to enhance and substitue drum patterns? We shall see.
Experience Hendrix announces a brand new collection that couples the brand new feature length documentary Music, Money, Madness... Jimi Hendrix In Maui with the accompanying live performances on both audio and video. The film chronicles the Jimi Hendrix Experience's storied visit to Maui, their performance on the dormant lower crater of Haleakala volcano on the island and how the band became ensnared with the ill-fated Rainbow Bridge movie produced by their controversial manager Michael Jeffery. Directed by John McDermott and produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott and McDermott, the documentary incorporates never before released original footage and new interviews with firsthand participants and key players such as Billy Cox, Eddie Kramer, Warner Bros. Executives and several Rainbow Bridge cast members, as well as it's director Chuck Wein. The Blu-ray will include the full documentary as well as the 16mm color film shot of the two afternoon performances captured on July 30, 1970 mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Also included in the package will be Live In Maui - both of the aforementioned sets spread across 3 LPs, newly restored and mixed by longtime Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer, and mastered by Bernie Grundman. The 2 sets finds The Experience - Hendrix, Billy Cox on bass, Mitch Mitchell on drums - at the height of it's powers playing flawlessly against a stunning natural backdrop. Included are breathtaking renditions of crowd favorites like "Foxey Lady, " "Purple Haze" and Voodoo Child (Slight Return), " as well as then-unreleased songs like "Dolly Dagger" and "Freedom" that showcased the new direction Hendrix was moving toward. 3LP/1BR.
